Therefore, it is the oxygen that contributes to the creation of the permanent magnet. The magnetic properties of the magnet arise from the specific arrangement of iron atoms within the magnetite.
This suggests that the oxygen atoms are the true source of magnetism. The soft iron ions bond to the polarized oxygen atoms and amplify their magnetic poles.
